So lately I’ve come to realization that I may be lactose intolerant and that dairy causes my skin to breakout. As a student it’s technically impossible for me to get through exam season without coffee and hence I end up downing endless cups of coffee which in turn causes my skin to get inflamed. The cycle is endless and hence I thought it was best for me to switch to dairy alternatives.
Personally, I am NOT a soy milk fan, I can consume flavored soy milk but plain soy milk just tastes terrible in my opinion. So, it all comes down to almond milk and coconut milk. Now each of them has their own distinct tastes. Almond milk may taste a little watery and extremely bland but it grows on your taste buds after a while. Coconut milk on the other hand is a little creamier and tastes sweet but if you’re not a fan of coconut flavor then you may not like the taste of it.
I use the ‘So Good’ unsweetened almond milk and the ‘Dabur homemade coconut milk’. The alternatives are undoubtedly expensive and not available in all the stores but hey, your health and skin are worth all the money spent.
Here are a few recipes that I use to make dairy free coffees
Coconut milk coffee:
This is the recipe I use to make coffee at 3 am when I am in my last-minute studying mode. It hardly takes you 5 mins to prepare this. Effortless yet delicious.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp coffee
- 1/2 tsp sugar (optional)
- ½ cup water
- 3-4 tbsp coconut milk
Directions:
- Add coffee, sugar and 1tsp of water to your mug. If you aren’t a fan of sweet coffees then do not add sugar at all because coconut milk is already sweet so it gives the coffee a natural sweetness.
- Using a whisk, beat the mixture until it changes its color from dark brown to a light creamish brown.
- Add the boiling hot water to the mixture (make sure you add it from a distance to ensure a lot of froth formed.
- Add the coconut milk depending on how creamy you want your coffee. I personally add very little milk until it changes its color to a lighter shade of brown.
- Warm it again if necessary. There, your instant coconut milk coffee is ready!
Almond milk latte:
This one is more of a substitute for Starbucks’s latte. Spending Rs.360 every time I crave a good chilled latte just dries up my wallet so I decided to remake their latte or at least try doing so.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup ice
- 1 cup almond milk
- ½ cup black coffee
- 1 tsp sugar/jaggery sugar/ honey
Directions:
Just blend all the ingredients together and pour them in your favorite mason jar or glass and sip on.
Ps: use metal or paper straws only because #savetheturtles
